ActiveCampaign alternative without per-contact pricing
Updated: · 13 min read · NetSendo Team
What is the best ActiveCampaign alternative without per-contact pricing?
If you want automation and a CRM pipeline without paying per contact, the main option is a self-hosted platform: you pay for a server and for sending, and list size stops setting the price. NetSendo is one: automations and funnels, a CRM with a sales pipeline, SMS and live webinars are all in its free SILVER licence, according to the pricing page. It is source-available software under the NetSendo EULA, not open source.
The trade is real, though. You run the server, you own deliverability, and some ActiveCampaign features (predictive sending, conditional content, inbox preview, a 1,000+ app marketplace) have no NetSendo equivalent today. If nobody on your team can look after a Linux server and DNS, a cheaper SaaS plan is the better alternative, and the last section says when to stay where you are.
What does ActiveCampaign cost at 10,000 and 50,000 contacts?
ActiveCampaign starts at $149–$589 a month for 10,000 contacts and $609–$1,169 for 50,000, depending on the plan. All prices on its pricing page are "starts at" and "billed annually".
| ActiveCampaign plan | 10,000 contacts | 50,000 contacts | Email sends | Users |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $149 (≈ $1,788/year) | not available (Starter is for ≤ 25,000 contacts) | 10× contact limit | 1 |
| Plus | $189 (≈ $2,268/year) | $609 (≈ $7,308/year) | 10× contact limit | 1 |
| Pro | $375 (≈ $4,500/year) | $969 (≈ $11,628/year) | 12× contact limit | 3 |
| Enterprise | $589 (≈ $7,068/year) | $1,169 (≈ $14,028/year) | 15× contact limit | 5 |
Monthly "starts at" prices in USD, billed annually, from activecampaign.com/pricing on 17 October 2026. Yearly figures are our multiplication (× 12). The page showed no month-to-month prices.
Four details change the real bill:
- Above 50,000 contacts there is no price. The selector goes from 50,000 to ">50,000", and every plan then shows "Talk to Sales".
- The CRM pipeline is an add-on. Pipeline management, deal records, account records and lead scoring are in the Pipelines add-on, available on Plus, Pro and Enterprise. SMS is an add-on too. The pricing page does not show either add-on's price.
- All contacts may count. For accounts created on or after 3 November 2025, "All contacts, regardless of their list status, count towards your contact limit", including unsubscribed and bounced ones. Older accounts count only active contacts (ActiveCampaign Help).
- Starter is limited. It allows 5 actions per automation and "limited" segmentation, and it has no landing pages.
ActiveCampaign has no free plan. It offers a 14-day free trial without a credit card and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What does ActiveCampaign do well?
ActiveCampaign is a mature, well-integrated automation platform, and much of its price buys things a self-hosted tool will not give you. Per its pricing page:
- Automation depth. Multi-step automation with multiple triggers, an automations map, "950+ automation recipes" and an AI-powered automation builder. Plus and above have unlimited automation actions.
- CRM for sales teams. With the Pipelines add-on: pipelines, deals, accounts and lead scoring. A Sales Engagement add-on adds automated 1:1 email and win probability.
- Deliverability tooling. Spam check, inbox preview and testing, predictive sending, account and industry-based send times, and a custom mail server domain. ActiveCampaign runs the sending infrastructure, so IP reputation is its job.
- Integrations. "1000+ integrations", Zapier, Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics (Enterprise), Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Calendly, Stripe, and Claude and ChatGPT via MCP.
- No operations. Hosting, updates, backups and uptime are included, with an uptime SLA on Enterprise.
If your team uses predictive sending, conditional content, Salesforce sync or dozens of marketplace integrations every week, the savings below may not be worth losing them.
How does NetSendo map to ActiveCampaign's features?
Most day-to-day automation and CRM work has an equivalent in NetSendo. The gaps are AI-driven send optimisation, inbox testing, landing pages and the size of the integration catalogue. We list only NetSendo features documented on the pricing page, in the README, in its docs or in its public source code, and say which is which.

Automations and funnels
NetSendo automations are rules. When an event happens (subscriber signup or activation, email opened, link clicked, form submitted, tag added or removed, field updated, bounce, unsubscribe), if the conditions match, then it runs actions: send an email, add or remove a tag, move or copy to a list, update a field, call a webhook, start a funnel or notify an admin. Rules can be rate-limited per subscriber (source strings).
Funnels are a separate builder for multi-step sequences, and the README mentions "built-in sales funnels" for products sold through Stripe, Polar and Shopify. ActiveCampaign's single visual canvas with branching and its recipe library are more polished. Expect to rebuild your journeys as a combination of rules and funnels.
CRM pipeline
This is where the pricing models differ most. ActiveCampaign sells pipelines as an add-on on top of Plus or higher. NetSendo's pricing page lists a "Complete CRM with Sales Pipeline" in the free SILVER licence.
In NetSendo's code, pipelines have ordered stages with won and lost flags and can create a task automatically on a stage change (migration). Deals carry a value, currency, owner, expected close date and status, and link to a contact and a company (migration). CRM tasks sync both ways with Google Calendar and can create Google Meet or Zoom meetings (docs), and Calendly bookings create CRM contacts and tasks.
What NetSendo does not document: win probability, automated 1:1 sales email sequences (ActiveCampaign's Sales Engagement add-on) and native Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics sync.
SMS
ActiveCampaign's SMS add-on lists personalised broadcasts in the US and UK (and AU in one table), with MMS only in the US and AU. NetSendo sends SMS through the gateway you choose, so country coverage depends on that gateway. Twilio, for example, lists US SMS at $0.0083 per segment plus carrier fees of $0.0025–$0.005 (Twilio, checked 16 October 2026). SMSAPI is an option for Poland. Consent rules and sender registration (such as US A2P 10DLC) still apply.
Webinars
ActiveCampaign's plans do not include webinars; you connect a webinar tool through integrations. NetSendo has live webinars (YouTube) in SILVER, and auto-webinars with a scenario builder and hybrid webinars on GOLD. Attendees can be segmented into registered, attended and missed, which makes a webinar follow-up sequence possible without a third tool.
AI campaigns and MCP
Both tools now talk to AI assistants. The difference is where the data sits. ActiveCampaign's MCP integration connects Claude and ChatGPT to its cloud. NetSendo's MCP server (77 tools) runs against your own instance, and its AI features can use local models through Ollama on GOLD. See the self-hosted MCP server guide and /en/agents.
What NetSendo does not have
To be clear about the gaps:
- No predictive sending or conditional content documented.
- No inbox preview or spam testing built in; use a separate inbox-testing service.
- No general landing-page builder. Webinars and funnels have their own pages; keep other pages on your website.
- A smaller integration catalogue. n8n, the REST API and webhooks fill many gaps, but you build those flows yourself.
- A smaller community. The public repository had 17 GitHub stars on 17 October 2026, so expect fewer tutorials and third-party answers.
- No managed hosting yet. Cloud hosting is planned at +$39/month but not live.
How much would you save? A cost comparison with assumptions
At 10,000 contacts the self-hosted estimate is about $33 a month against $189 for ActiveCampaign Plus. At 50,000 it is about $103 against $609. Both NetSendo figures are estimates, not quotes, and they exclude your time.
ActiveCampaign "starts at" prices billed annually; NetSendo infrastructure estimate. Prices checked 17 October 2026.
Assumptions (the same model as our cost guide):
- 4 emails per contact per month: 40,000 emails at 10,000 contacts and 200,000 at 50,000. That is well within ActiveCampaign's 10× send limit.
- Server: DigitalOcean Basic droplet, 4 GiB for $24 at 10,000 contacts and 8 GiB for $48 at 50,000, plus weekly backups at 20% (DigitalOcean). Server sizing is our assumption, not a benchmark.
- Sending: Amazon SES at $0.10 per 1,000 emails; a dedicated IP at $24.95/month at 50,000 contacts only (AWS).
- Licence: NetSendo SILVER (free) or GOLD ($97/month).
- Not included: your time, SMS, the ActiveCampaign Pipelines and SMS add-ons, taxes.
| 10,000 contacts / month | 50,000 contacts / month | 50,000 contacts / year | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ActiveCampaign Plus (without Pipelines add-on) | $189 | $609 | $7,308 |
| ActiveCampaign Pro (without Pipelines add-on) | $375 | $969 | $11,628 |
| NetSendo SILVER + infrastructure | $32.80 | $102.55 | $1,230.60 |
| NetSendo GOLD + infrastructure | $129.80 | $199.55 | $2,394.60 |
Estimate for NetSendo: 10k = $24 + $4.80 backups + $4 SES; 50k = $48 + $9.60 + $20 SES + $24.95 dedicated IP. GOLD adds $97. ActiveCampaign prices billed annually.
The comparison understates the gap if you need a CRM pipeline, because ActiveCampaign's Pipelines add-on comes on top and its price is not published. It overstates the gap if your time is expensive. A simple break-even check at an illustrative $50 an hour:
| Comparison | Monthly gap | Break-even admin hours per month at $50/h |
|---|---|---|
| 10k: ActiveCampaign Plus vs NetSendo SILVER | $156.20 | about 3.1 hours |
| 10k: ActiveCampaign Plus vs NetSendo GOLD | $59.20 | about 1.2 hours |
| 50k: ActiveCampaign Plus vs NetSendo SILVER | $506.45 | about 10.1 hours |
| 50k: ActiveCampaign Pro vs NetSendo GOLD | $769.45 | about 15.4 hours |
If running the server, handling bounces and watching deliverability takes you more hours than that, ActiveCampaign is cheaper for you. Above 50,000 contacts we cannot compare, because ActiveCampaign publishes no price; on the self-hosted side, our cost guide estimates about $123/month at 100,000 contacts.
How do you migrate from ActiveCampaign to NetSendo?
Plan two to three weeks of parallel running: export, rebuild, authenticate, warm up, then switch. Time the switch to your ActiveCampaign renewal, because plans are billed annually.
- Export contacts. In ActiveCampaign, go to Contacts, open the ellipsis menu and choose Export. The CSV includes custom fields, lead scores and deal scores, with all tags in a single column. Contact notes cannot be exported, and the download link is valid for 7 days (help). Export lists separately by status (active, unsubscribed, bounced) if you want clean files.
- Export deals. With the Pipelines add-on, go to Deals, set Status to All and Pipeline to All Pipelines, then Export. The CSV includes deal ID, title, value, currency, status, owner, pipeline, stage, primary contact and forecasted close date. Deal notes are not exported, you need export permissions, and the link expires after 30 days (help).
- Install NetSendo. Four commands (
git clone,cd NetSendo,cp .env.example .env, docker compose up -d) and a SILVER or GOLD licence; the quickstart has the details. Put a reverse proxy with HTTPS in front and connect a sending provider. - Import contacts and suppress the rest. Import active contacts into a list, mapping columns to custom fields and splitting the tag column into tags. Through the API that is
POST /api/v1/lists/{id}/import, up to 5,000 rows per request with adry_runpreview (API docs). Settrigger_automationsto false during the migration, or old contacts get your welcome sequence. Put unsubscribed and bounced addresses on the suppression list. - Recreate the pipeline. Create pipelines and stages to match ActiveCampaign, then re-enter or script open deals from the deals CSV. Closed deals can stay in an archive file unless you report on them.
- Rebuild automations. List every active ActiveCampaign automation, its trigger, conditions and actions, and rebuild each as NetSendo rules and funnels. Start with the welcome, lead-nurture and post-purchase flows; retire automations nobody looked at in the last quarter.
- Authenticate and warm up. Set SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your new provider and ramp up volume gradually, starting with your most engaged contacts. Our deliverability guide has a warm-up schedule. Keep ActiveCampaign's DNS records until you stop sending from it.
- Switch forms and integrations, then cancel. Point site forms, WooCommerce, Stripe or n8n flows at NetSendo, run both systems for a send cycle, and cancel or downgrade ActiveCampaign at renewal.
Consent travels with the data: keep records of when and how each contact opted in, and do not add contacts without a lawful basis to marketing lists. Self-hosting keeps subscriber data on infrastructure you control, which helps with GDPR obligations, but compliance depends on how you run it.
When should you stay with ActiveCampaign?
Stay, or pick another hosted tool, if any of these is true:
- Nobody owns operations. Self-hosting means updates, backups, monitoring and DNS every month.
- You depend on features NetSendo lacks: predictive sending, conditional content, inbox preview, win probability, automated 1:1 sales sequences, WhatsApp, HIPAA support, or native Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics sync.
- Your integrations live in ActiveCampaign's marketplace and would each need rebuilding in n8n or the API.
- Your list is small and your time is expensive. At 10,000 contacts the gap to ActiveCampaign Plus is about $156 a month, roughly three hours of admin time at $50 an hour.
- You want the vendor to own deliverability. On your own infrastructure, IP reputation and blocklists are your job.
If you are comparing self-hosted options rather than leaving SaaS, see listmonk vs Mautic vs NetSendo. Mautic, for example, is an open-source automation suite with lead scoring and CRM sync plugins, which some ActiveCampaign users will prefer.
